When Death Occurs: What steps should be taken?
- A medical examiner, attending physician, or coroner must pronounce death.
- Notify a funeral home.
- Relatives must be contacted.
- Locate insurance policy, will, or funeral contracts owned by the deceased.
The following Vital Statistics are required by the State of Texas:
- Full legal name of deceased (including maiden name if applicable)
- Date of Birth
- Place of Birth
- U.S. Armed Forces Information
- Social Security Number
- How many years of education
- Marital Status
- Employer
- Occupation
- Home Address
- Mother's Name
- Father's Name
Additional information needed, before making funeral arrangements:
- Spouse's maiden name (if applicable)
- Disposition or burial location
- Clothing to be used in dressing the deceased, including undergarments
- All relatives to be listed in obituary notices
